Featured Material – PEEK

PEEK (polyetheretherketone) is a semi-crystalline, high temperature engineering thermoplastic. It is an excellent material for a wide range of applications where thermal, chemical and combustion properties are critical.  One of the biggest advantages to PEEK is its ability to retain its flexural and tensile properties at temperatures in excess of 482 F.

Other notable properties include very low moisture absorption and outstanding wear and abrasion resistance. It is resistant to high doses of gamma radiation and has low smoke and toxic gas emissions. Virgin unfilled PEEK is FDA approved.

These attributes make PEEK an ideal material for bushings, bearings, seals and back up rings. It is also suitable for pump and valve components as well as medical instruments and food processing machinery components that are exposed to extreme chemicals and other challenging environments.

Pictured is an example of a roller that Eagle Performance Plastics produced for a customer in the food processing industry. We assisted our customer in specifying standard un-filled PEEK to handle the high speeds and abrasion resistance this application required. Other considerations were chemical resistance and especially the excellent hydrolysis resistance PEEK exhibits because this is in a wet environment.

In addition to unfilled PEEK, there are several other grades that offer enhanced characteristics:
